SAFE SANCTUARY

Safe Sanctuary offers clear child abuse prevention and risk reduction policies that all local Methodist churches have been mandated to have in place and operational since December 31, 2005.  In this section you will find information and links that outline our many policies and procedures designed to keep every child safe from all forms of abuse.  Among our many efforts toward this endeavor include but are not limited to background checks, visibility, age requirements, roving monitors and/or multiple adults in each room where children or youth are present.  

STATEMENT OF COVENANT AND POLICY:

  • As a Christian community of faith and a United Methodist congregation, we pledge to conduct the ministry of the Gospel in a manner that assures the safety and spiritual growth of all children and youth and the adults who work with them.  

  • We will follow reasonable safety measures in the recruitment and hiring of staff and volunteers.  

  • We will implement prudent procedures of operation for all programs and events.  

  • We will educate all those who work with children and youth as to the use of all appropriate policies and procedures. 

  • We will have a clearly defined procedure for reporting suspected incidents of abuse.

All adult staff & volunteers must meet the folllowing requirements before beginning service:

  • Have never been convicted of any child abuse offense.

  • A regular attender or member of HUMC for at least 6 months.

  • Completed background check.

  • Attended Safe Sanctuary training and successfully passed the exam.

  • Completed Volunteer application on file.

  • One-on-one interview with a HUMC ministry supervisor or staff member.
