Children's Small Group Ministry (Traditionally known as Sunday School)
We offer small group studies for children ages two-years-old through 5th graders (nursery is available for children ages birth through one). All ongoing children's small group classes are held 9:30-10:15 a.m. on Sunday mornings.
- Our classes are broken down as follows: 2-Year-Old Class, 3 & 4-Year-Old Class, Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade, and 4th & 5th Grade Class. We are blessed to have such a wonderful group of teachers who dedicate their time to teaching our children about Christ each week.
- Our 2-year-old through 2nd grade teachers follows the FaithWeaver curriculum by Group Publishing. This curriculum does a wonderful job of teaching the children about God while strengthening their faith through life application teachings. Even preschoolers are learning about how Scripture can help them through everyday situations.
- Our 3rd grade class learns from “Bible Blitz,” a wonderful curriculum focused on teaching important Bible learning skills. We give all of our 3rd graders Bible’s at the beginning of the school year, and this curriculum helps them learn more about their Bible and how to use it.
- Our 4th & 5th graders learn from a great pre-teen curriculum called “GRAPPLE.” This curriculum is especially designed for pre-teens and their growing needs. The kids play games and have small group discussions about their faith and how it pertains to their increasingly complex world. We offer a 4th & 5th grade youth group called The Core, which meets every Sunday evening at 5:00 p.m. During Core we explore the same themes they covered with Grapple, but we do so in a more in-depth way through games, discussion, and video.
Registering your children for our classes is not required, but is strongly recommended. We want to assure that the children in our classrooms are safe – this means that if your child has a food allergy or a medical condition, we’d like to know so our teachers are prepared and can assure your child’s safety. We offer a wide variety of ongoing adult small groups that meet during this same time frame as well as quality child care if you need it. We invite you to come and experience our wonderful Christian education classes!
When are Children "Promoted" to their Next Class?
After school begins and usually on the last Sunday in August, we hold what is known as "Promotion Sunday" during Sunday school (9:30-10:15 a.m.). All of our Sunday school teachers and 2nd adults are asked to be present in their classrooms for this event and we promote this as a wonderful opportunity to allow the children to get to know their teachers and teachers to get to know their students. It is on this particular Sunday that kids are invited to "move up" to their next grade level or age group. We follow the Charlotte-Mecklenburg rule regarding the age cut off for grade levels, which is August 31. Therefore, children need to be the appropriate age by August 31 of that year to be able to "move up" to the next class. Here is how this works per age level:
- Infants will move up to the Pre-1 room when they begin walking or turn 1, whichever comes first
- 1-year-olds will move up to the Pre-2 room when they turn 2-years-old
- 2-year-olds will move up to the Pre-3 room on promotion Sunday only if they turn 3-years-old by August 31 of that year
- 3-year-olds will move up to the Pre-4 room on promotion Sunday only if they turn 4-years-old by August 31 of that year
- 4-year-olds will move up to the kindergarten class on promotion Sunday if they are entering kindergarten that year
- Kindergarteners - 4th graders will move up to their next grade level on promotion Sunday
In instances where a child is held back in school or retained a year prior to entering kindergarten, we will certainly work with parents on the right way to proceed in regards to which class would be best during Sunday school. Please contact Rev. Monica Humpal to discuss options and we will do whatever you, as a parent, feels is the best descision for your child.
